June is National Safety Month — and as temperatures rise, heat illness becomes one of the most serious risks facing outdoor workers, including those in the oil and gas industry. Heat stroke is the #1 cause of fatality from heat, making proper heat safety training not just important, but potentially life-saving.

OSHA's Heat Illness Prevention Campaign

OSHA is in its 4th consecutive year of its Heat Illness Prevention Campaign, centered on three simple words: Water. Rest. Shade. Every outdoor worker needs access to water, regular rest breaks, and shade during hot weather. The National Safety Council (NSC) echoes these recommendations and adds that employers should acclimatize new workers gradually to hot conditions.

OSHA Heat Safety Educational Resources

OSHA provides five key educational resources for employers and workers:

  1. Educational Resources — fact sheets, posters, and training materials
  2. Using the Heat Index — guide to understanding heat index and risk levels
  3. Training — comprehensive training resources for supervisors and workers
  4. Online Toolkit — downloadable materials for workplace safety programs
  5. Fatality Map — interactive map of heat-related fatalities to understand where and when incidents occur

Hosted by James Cross (Chief Experience Officer, EWN), the session brought together more than 150 years of combined experience from former state and federal regulators and industry leaders. Meet the panel Kevin Speicher, Senior Regulatory Advisor, EWN; former Chief of Pipeline Safety, New York State Department of Public Service Steve Allen, former Director of Pipeline Safety, State of Indiana; longtime PSMS advocate and former EWN executive Alan Mayberry, former PHMSA Associate Administrator, now with Jana and serving on boards focused on advanced risk and geohazards Jeff Wiese, former PHMSA Associate Administrator; former offshore operations leader; longtime safety management advocate The tone was clear from the start: no judgment, anonymous questions, and a focus on what operators can actually do next.
